Sigiriya Lions PawA colourful trekking and touring adventure walking and sightseeing in the paradise island of Sri Lanka. In terms of sheer variety of landscape and culture, few places on earth can rival the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka at the southern tip of India. The highest summits of the central ranges of Sri Lanka rise to 2500 metres (8200 feet), whilst on all sides the land falls away through emerald-green tea plantations and vast forest reserves to a tropical coastline. This popular walking and toruing itinerary includes many of the historical and archaeological highlights of Sri Lanka, such as the natural rock fortress of Sigiriya and the former capital of Kandy. However, this is also a trekking adventure and we have incorporated a 2-day walking traverse of the Knuckles Range, as well as day-walking excursions on the Horton Plains, where we visit the dramatic 1000 metre (3300 foot)drop-off at World’s End. This is followed by the optional ascent walking to the summit of sacred Adam’s Peak (2243m / 7360ft) which involves a midnight start for those hoping to catch the sunrise. A day at leisure on the beach brings this fantastically varied trekking and touring holiday to Sri Lanka to a close.

Trip Guide

This is not a long or sustained trekking trip. The intention is simply to make the best of the varied hiking which Sri Lanka has to offer. To that end, we seek out a number of day-walks. The altitudes attained are never sufficiently high to cause problems and the underfoot conditions are generally good, on tracks and trails through tea plantations and forest and between villages. We may encounter some slippery conditions on forest trails. There are 6 days when we do a significant amount of walking, averaging 5 to 6 hours on each of these days. Probably the toughest of the days, because we do the hard bit at night and in the dark, is the ascent of Adam's Peak, involving 4 hours up and 2 hours down on an unrelenting series of more than 3000 steps. We have given the trip the EASY grade because of the low altitude and the non-continuous nature of the walking.
